Born in Cheshire as the son of a tailor, Speed spent his adult life in London, where he entered the family profession himself. His passion for history eventually led him to join the Society of Antiquaries, where his friendships with other antiquarians and the patronage of Sir Fulke Greville, Lord Brooke, allowed him to branch out into publishing. He also garnered the attention of Queen Elizabeth, who in 1598 granted him a position at the Customs House in London, a post which gave him ample free time and income to pursue his scholarly interests. Speed, a contemporary of Shakespeare who would have moved in the same London intellectual circles, did not hold much affection for the Bard despite their shared patron, the Queen; Speed referred to him as a ‘papist,’ quite a derogatory remark in an England ruled by the staunchly-Protestant Queen Elizabeth.

Speed began his venture into cartography by printing historical maps depicting the Holy Land and historic military invasions of the British Isles. Blaeu studied under Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, one of the major figures in the history of modern astronomy. After returning to the Low Countries from Denmark in the late 1590s, Blaeu set up shop as a cartographer and globe maker. He produced numerous atlases, and in 1633 became the official mapmaker of the Dutch East India Company, the megacorporation which, thanks to Dutch naval prowess, controlled the seventeenth-century global economy. Numerous depictions of Blaeu maps appear in the work of Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675), one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age. The firm was founded by Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571–1638), who initially trained under the astronomer Tycho Brahe before establishing himself as a leading printer, globe maker, and mapmaker in Amsterdam by the early 1600s. Blaeu’s first map appeared in 1604, and by the 1610s he was recognized as one of the city’s foremost cartographers.

Willem Blaeu’s sons, Joan (1596–1673) and Cornelis, inherited the business after his death in 1638, with Joan eventually becoming the sole proprietor. Under Joan’s leadership, the House of Blaeu reached its zenith, publishing the monumental Atlas Maior in 1662—an eleven-volume work featuring around 600 maps, regarded as the most splendid and expensive atlas of the 17th century. Joan Blaeu was also the official cartographer to the Dutch East India Company (VOC), a prestigious appointment that cemented the firm’s influence in European and global mapmaking.

Title: Novissima et Accuratissima Totius Hungariae Tabula

Author: Justus Danckerts

Date: 1688

Medium: Hand-Colored Copperplate Engraving

Condition: Very Good Plus

Inches: 19 x 15.75

Centimeters: 48.2 x 40 [Image]

Product ID: 233033

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0389/6416/6795/products/233003HungarybyDanckerts1688hand-coloredcopperplateengraving.jpg?v=1596578890
