Double hemisphere world map set in a restrained Baroque surround. The map appeared in Tobias Conrad Lotter's Atlas Géographique de cent et Huit Cartes Générales et Spéciales, Augsburg, 1778. Contains inset maps of the northern and southern hemispheres in upper surround. As with the example at the Library of Congress, date in cartouche is principally obscured. Shows tracks of numerous explorers such as Magellan, Tasman, North, etc. Printed on the eve of Captain Cook’s epic Pacific voyages, map shows a partial outline for Australia and 'New Zeeland' with New Guinea reluctantly and very tenuously detached from Australia. Includes explanatory note at bottom in Baroque-inspired cartouche, loosely translated: The author gives an account in his new introduction to the geography of the change he made on this map as well as from the others he published…

Tobias Conrad Lotter was the son-in-law of Georg Matthäus Seutter. He married Suetter’s daughter in 1740 and succeeded him in 1756, going into partnership with Albrecht Seutter’s son and Georg Balthazar. Lotter inherited half of the plates from the house of Seutter in 1758, and set up an independent publishing house in Augsburg in the same year. He is know for his prolific output of maps and atlases.
