This map in particular was the first Dutch-made chart to show the Gulf Coast; in fact, at the time of its publication it stood as the most detailed map ever produced of the region. Following Roggeveen's death in 1679, Amsterdam colorist, engraver, and printer Jacob Robijn (1649 - c. 1707) bought the plates of Het Brandende Veen, publishing the work the following year.

Born outside of Rotterdam, Roggeveen (1628 - 1679) moved in 1658 to Middleburg, the seat of both the Dutch East and West India Companies. He worked for both companies, teaching the art of navigation and helping to maintain their collections of hydrographic manuscripts and charts, some of which included Spanish portolans (nautical charts) of the West Indies. In the mid-1660s, assisted by his access to these collections, he became the first Dutch cartographer to publish a set of large scale navigational charts of the North American coastline and West Indies. Later, he would publish similar charts detailing the coast of West Africa. Many of Roggeveen's maps are based upon the earlier work of Hessel Gerritsz (1581 - 1632) and Joan Vingboons (1616 - 1670), both cartographers for the Dutch East and West India Companies; however, Roggeveen was the first to show the whole coastline of both North America and the Caribbean.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0389/6416/6795/products/233093Coastofthewestindies1680Antiquemapoldmapoldmapsantiquemapsvintagemapseuropeanmapsamericanmapsdecorativemapsoldcartographymapmakers.jpg?v=1619730192
new-england-new-belgium-and-virginia-jansson-1639
Nova Anglia Novum Belgium et Virginia: Jansson 1639

Title: Nova Anglia Novum Belgium et Virginia

Author: Jan Jansson

Date: 1639

Medium: Hand-colored copperplate engraving

Condition: Good - wear along issued center fold, foxing and uneven toning

Inches: 21 x 16 1/4 [Image]

Centimeters: 53.34 x 41.2 [Image]

Product ID: 222004

This influential map is derived from a less-well-circulated 1630 chart by Johanes de Laet. Enlarged, and expanded to the north and east slightly, it carries de Laet's narrative on the reverse. A sign of the Dutch influence here is that both atlas producers largely declined to include the advanced cartography of Champlain, thereby relegating it altogether. Here Janssonius differs from Hondius' AMERICA SEPTENTRIONALIS in his delineation of the Great Lakes area. The extension northwards enables him to encapsulate Grand Lac, something de Laet did not do. Although Karpinski claims this to be the first maps to show a complete Lake Superior, there is no evidence to suggest that this lake was meant, it more likely represents Lake Huron,

There are three known states of the map. In 1647 Janssonius alters the title to match that of Blaeu, to give greater prominence to the Dutch colonies. He also draws on Blaeu for the design of the cartouche, the Indian village scene and much of the wildlife depicted. The nomenclature is unchanged. A third state appeared following the auction of the copperplates in 1694, acquired by Petrus Schenk from the heirs of Jansson van Waesberge. This was the most sophisticated rendering of the Texas coastline then available. Exclusively concerned with navigation, it includes no details of the interior. Van Keulen derived the map's geography from an earlier, exceedingly rare Hessel Gerritsz chart (published c. 1631). Because the region had not undergone significant cartographic developments for a period, all place names hail from earlier Spanish charts and maps. Cabo Escondido most likely relates to Cape San Blas near the site of Apalachicola, while the Baja de Spiritu Sancto represents the mouth of the Mississippi River and the inset at lower left show the waters of Vera Cruz. Van Keulen orients the Gulf Coast such that north corresponds to the map's right margin, a common convention in Dutch see charts of the era. Across the ocean, Bellin depicts western Europe, marking the cities of Lisbon, Madrid, Paris, Amsterdam, and London, among others. He also includes the Mediterranean islands of Corsica, Sardinia, and the Balearic Islands, as well as Atlantic islands such as the Azores, the Cape Verde Isles, and the Canary Islands. Longitude from the Ferro Meridian, which is prominently labeled. In the map's center appears a detailed compass rose, and rhumb lines extend from various points across the ocean. Appointed hydrographer of the French Navy at the age of eighteen, he eventually became Hydrographer to the King in 1741. He published numerous sea atlases and charts which would be reprinted into the nineteenth century, as well as many maps depicting French colonial territories in the New World.
