This jetty has been proivded with a long concrete walk so that it is possible for the fisherman to walk up and down and fish in comfort."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0389/6416/6795/products/GulfOilCorpFIshgidePortArthurTexas.jpg?v=1593107752
texas-indian-territory-tunison-1885
Texas & Indian Territory: Tunison 1885

Author: Tunison

Date: 1885

Medium: Wax engraving

Condition: Very Good

Inches: 14 x 23 [Paper]

Centimeters: 35.5 x 58 [Paper]

Product ID: 306000

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0389/6416/6795/products/TexasandIndianTerritoryTunison_snortherntexasandindianterritory.jpg?v=1593113456
mexico-mexique-1845
Mexico (Méxique): Duvotenay 1845

Author: Duvotenay

Date: 1845

Medium: Hand Colored Copperplate engraving

Condition: Good

Inches: 9.75 x 13 [Paper]

Centimeters: 24.8 x 33 [Paper]

Product ID: 306001

Full Title: Mexique par Th. Thanks to Bache, the Coast Survey evolved into an immense resource for the U.S. government and one of the foremost scientific institutions in the country leading up to the Civil War.

Author: Tunison

Date: 1885

Medium: Wax Engraving

Condition: Very Good

Inches: 22.5 x 14

Centimeters: 57 x 35.5

Product ID: 306004

Author: Rand, McNally & Co.

Date: 1898

Medium: Wax Engraving

Condition: Very Good

Inches: 8.5 x 11

Centimeters: 22 x 28

Product ID: 102284

In 1856, William H. Established by Texas in 1860 and named for John A. Greer, it encompassed a large area in what is now southwestern Oklahoma. For decades, Texas claimed Greer County based on disagreements about which fork of the Red River marked the boundary—Texas argued for the North Fork, while the U.S. favored the Prairie Dog Town (South) Fork. In 1896, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the United States, transferring 1.5 million acres from Texas to Oklahoma Territory, and settlers quickly organized under the new jurisdiction. The episode left a legacy on maps and local history, so Greer County sometimes appears as a "ghost" jurisdiction in older Texas Panhandle maps.

Background on Creator

In 1856, William H. Flemming's map of Texas is often called the "German Arrowsmith" map, from which it derives its cartography. It is certainly one of, if not the most, detailed maps of Texas printed before the Civil War. The map is especially strong in identifying early roads, rivers, towns, and forts, often not shown on other contemporary maps of Texas.

Eastern Texas is divided into 30 numbered counties, while all major towns, rivers, and roads are depicted with impressive accuracy. In the lower-left corner is an inset map detailing Galveston Bay. Texas's important port. The panhandle is divided into 12 sections. West Texas is shown to be only very sparsely settled, while the state's modern western borders are demarcated, albeit with some inaccuracies, as the area had yet to be scientifically surveyed. One of the first maps of Texas to eliminate the 'Stovepipe', it having been ceded to the Federal government in exchange for Washington paying off the massive debts that the Lone Star Republic accrued during its War of Independence.

The map was published by Carl Flemming (1806-1878), a German publisher based in Glogau, Silesia, who had earlier published a map of Texas while it was an independent republic. Bache (1806-1867) served as the 6th Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey. Born in Philadelphia, he came from a prominent political family, and was the great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin. Under his leadership, the Coast Survey’s operations grew significantly, expanding from nine to seventeen states as it surveyed the Gulf and West Coasts. Bache ran meticulous studies relating to ocean currents, tides, and the earth’s magnetic field, endeavors which provided in-depth knowledge about U.S. coastal geography. This map in particular was the first Dutch-made chart to show the Gulf Coast; in fact, at the time of its publication it stood as the most detailed map ever produced of the region. Following Roggeveen's death in 1679, Amsterdam colorist, engraver, and printer Jacob Robijn (1649 - c. 1707) bought the plates of Het Brandende Veen, publishing the work the following year.

Born outside of Rotterdam, Roggeveen (1628 - 1679) moved in 1658 to Middleburg, the seat of both the Dutch East and West India Companies. He worked for both companies, teaching the art of navigation and helping to maintain their collections of hydrographic manuscripts and charts, some of which included Spanish portolans (nautical charts) of the West Indies. In the mid-1660s, assisted by his access to these collections, he became the first Dutch cartographer to publish a set of large scale navigational charts of the North American coastline and West Indies. Later, he would publish similar charts detailing the coast of West Africa. Many of Roggeveen's maps are based upon the earlier work of Hessel Gerritsz (1581 - 1632) and Joan Vingboons (1616 - 1670), both cartographers for the Dutch East and West India Companies; however, Roggeveen was the first to show the whole coastline of both North America and the Caribbean.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0389/6416/6795/products/233093Coastofthewestindies1680Antiquemapoldmapoldmapsantiquemapsvintagemapseuropeanmapsamericanmapsdecorativemapsoldcartographymapmakers.jpg?v=1619730192
marion-county-texas-o-o-terrell-1920
Marion County, Texas: O.O. Now with significant printing experience under their belt, the three men embarked on several publishing endeavors, capitalizing on the massive success of Chicago’s railroad industry by printing tickets, timetables, and railroad guides.
