Llyod & Co., was issued for their “Atlas of the United States” in the early 1870s. It captures Texas in the Reconstruction era, with densely subdivided eastern counties contrasted against the lightly formed western regions labeled “Bexar District,” “Young Territory,” and the “Unexplored Stacado (Staked Plain).” Of special note, this is the only Texas map we are aware of that depicts the proposed Wigefarth County in the lower Panhandle along the Indian Territory border, its boundaries only partly engraved and the northern line indicated by color alone, attesting to its tentative and ultimately ephemeral status. Indian Territory is shown not in counties but as the domains of various Native nations, while railroads, towns, and rivers are carefully engraved throughout, combining decorative pastel coloring and ornate borders with highly practical geographic detail.

Background on Creator

Warner & Beers was a Chicago-based map publishing firm active in the late 19th century, recognized for issuing atlas maps that reflect the commercial and decorative cartographic production of the era. Their work is most often encountered in the context of city, county, and world atlas maps, which were produced for both practical reference and a growing market of collectors and subscribers.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0389/6416/6795/files/Warner_BeersCountyMapofTexasandIndianTerritory_c.1870.jpg?v=1779989699
