Legends along the left and bottom margins written in French indicate important sites in the city such as churches, palaces, gardens, prisons, civic institutions, etc. Labelled are the Moskva and Neglinnaya Rivers, and the lower margin is decorated with various scenes from the countryside.
Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733), born in Leyden, Holland, was a Dutch publisher who dominated the map and atlas scene in the late 1600s and early 1700s. He started young, apprenticing at a bookstore by nine and by 21, he was a full-fledged entrepreneur with his own publishing, printing, and auction house. His success continued – in 1692, he would become a high commissioner of the Booksellers Guild.
