Background on Creator

Louis Brion de la Tour (circa 1743–1803) was a prominent 18th-century French geographer and demographer who held the official title of “Ingénieur Géographe du Roi,” or King’s Engineer Geographer. Although little is known about his early life, Brion de la Tour gained recognition for his prolific output of maps and atlases—his most notable work being the “Atlas Général,” published in collaboration with Louis Charles Desnos. Much of his career was devoted to scientific cartography, and he was active in Paris, where he published detailed geographical works covering Europe, the Americas, and beyond, significantly contributing to Enlightenment-era advancements in both geography and demography.
