Image of 'Pipefishes' (Syngnathus Ophidion, Syngnathus Acus, Syngnathus Typhle) from Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische by Marcus Elieser Bloch, pub. Berlin, 1782-1795.

Marcus Elieser Bloch (1723–1799), a German medical doctor and naturalist, is generally considered one of the most important ichthyologists of the eighteenth century. Between 1782 and 1795, he published his Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische, a twelve-volume, beautifully illustrated comprehensive work on fishes. The first three volumes, titled Oeconomische Naturgeschichte der Fische Deutschlands, describe fishes in Germany, while the remaining volumes, titled Naturgeschichte Der Auslandischen Fische, deal with fishes from other parts of the world.
