John James Audubon's The Birds of America stands as the greatest ornithological book ever produced. This iconic work consisting of 435 double-elephant folio sized plates depicting 1,065 different species was printed by the Havells of London between 1827 and 1838. Audubon sketched thousands of birds from life in the wild, and his original watercolors served as the basis for the volume's hand-colored lithographs.

The 'Amsterdam Edition' is a limited edition facsimile of the 1827-38 Havell edition of Birds of America. It was printed jointly in 1971 by Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Ltd. of Amsterdam and the Johnson Reprint Corporation of New York. The printers based their work off of the Teyler's Museum's copy of the original nineteenth-century work and used color photolithography to recreate Audubon's birds.
