Image of redcedar, or toona, by Dutch botanist Abraham Munting (1626-1683). Munting studied at the universities of Franeker, Utrecht, and Leiden, also spending time studying in France. He taught at the precursor to the University of Groningen as a professor of chemistry and botany for over twenty years. Munting also managed the Hortus Botanicus Groninganus, a botanical garden in Groningen which his father had founded, from 1658 until his death. Though the garden has since changed locations within Groningen, it remains in operation and is the oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands.
