Background on Creator
Imprimerie Lemercier, often referred to simply as Lemercier, was a renowned 19th-century French printing firm best known for its pioneering work in lithography and fine art reproduction. Founded in Paris by printer Rose-Joseph Lemercier (1803–1887), the company became one of Europe’s leading lithographic establishments by the mid-1800s, collaborating with many leading artists and publishers of the era. Lemercier’s workshop produced high-quality prints, posters, and reproductions using innovative color lithography techniques that set new standards for precision and artistry in printmaking.
By the 1840s and 1850s, Lemercier had expanded to employ hundreds of workers and was responsible for numerous landmark works in architectural, cartographic, and artistic lithography, including collaborations with artists such as Géricault, Delacroix, Daumier, and Corot. The firm’s name appeared frequently on maps and prints distributed throughout Europe and America, often marked simply as “Imp. Lemercier, Paris.” Even into the late 19th century, Lemercier remained synonymous with technical excellence and was instrumental in establishing Paris as the center of high-quality lithographic production.
