Auctore Guillelmo Delisle Scientiarum Academia

A Paris Chez Dezauche, Successeur des Srs. Delisle et Buache Rue des Noyes près celle des Anglois

Cum Privilegio ad vicennum Oct 1780.

Map of Ancient Greece and environs, including Crete, Asia Minor, the Ionian Sea, the Aegean Sea, and the Libyan Sea. Produced by French cartographer Jean-Claude Dezauche (1770-1824), successor to both Philippe Buache (1700-1773) and Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726). Buache trained under de l'Isle, who later became his father-in-law after Buache married his daughter. Just as Buache took over de l'Isle's firm after his death, Dezauche purchased the rights to Buache's and de l'Isle's work from Buauche's nephew in 1780. He then reissued many of their maps with his own improvements.

Guillaume de l'Isle was the son of a French professor who served as tutor to the aristocracy. He followed in his father's footsteps, attending the French Academy of Sciences and becoming tutor to King Louis XIV's son. His connections to French Academic circles gave him access to the latest discoveries in French exploration. This fact, combined with his own knowledge and skill, made his maps some of the most accurate of their time.
