Published in Venice by Giuseppe Kier and drawn and engraved by Giambattista Garlato, this 1841 plan provides a richly detailed view of Venice and its neighboring lagoon islands. The map identifies nearly 200 churches, palaces, public buildings, and other landmarks, while separate plans and views of Murano, San Michele, San Lazzaro, San Servolo, and the Lido underscore Venice’s singular relationship with its surrounding lagoon. Both an accurate urban survey and an elegant traveler’s guide, it is an important example of nineteenth-century Venetian cartography.
Background on Creator
Giambattista Garlato was a nineteenth-century Venetian draughtsman and engraver associated with the precise topographical mapping of Venice and its lagoon. Although biographical documentation is limited his works combines careful urban survey with refined engraving, recording Venice’s streets, canals, major monuments, public buildings, and surrounding islands with unusual clarity. His plan stands as a significant example of early nineteenth-century Venetian city cartography and served as the basis for later printed maps of Venice.
