Lovely Bordeaux Wine Map
This highly detailed and attractive map is from Bordeaux et ses Vins Classées par Ordre de Mérite (Bordeaux and its Wines Classified by Order of Merit), 11th edition, 1949. Curiously, the map is from the 1930 edition, with the date inked out, possible due to post-war paper shortages. Shows the various terroir with color coding; the Médoc, Blaye & Bourg, the Libournais, Entre-Deux-Mers, Graves and Sauternais, Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur (these are the modern terms, those on the map reflect earlier designations since updated). Also shows train routes and stations, roads, cities, towns, villages, canals, and rivers, all in extensive detail.
The soil and terroir of Bordeaux can be split into two distinctive types. On the Left Bank of Bordeaux, the best terroir is predominantly gravel-based. On the Right Bank of Bordeaux, the soil is dominated by clay and limestone. The gravel found in the Medoc (Left Bank) plays a vital role in the grape's development. Bordeaux enjoys the distinction of being the largest Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) vineyard of France, and this can be attributed to its great diversity of high-quality terroirs. The broad range of wines that it produces make it one of the most important and celebrated wine growing regions in the world.

Old folds with mild age toning throughout, more pronounced at folds, some offset, mild foxing. Trimmed close to neatline at left. A very nice little wine map.
