Beautiful large-format portrait of Washington engraved by Jean Nicolas Laugier (1785-1875). The engraving was modeled after a painting by French artist Léon Cogniet (1794-1880), though Laugier's depiction of Washington's head was based on a portrait by American artist Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828). Standing full-length in uniform in front of his horse, with a cannon in the fore-ground and a port (potentially Boston harbor) in the background, this magisterial depiction aptly portrays Washington's commanding size and presence. In his 1859 Recollections and Private Memoirs of Washington, George Washington Parke Custis (son of Washington's stepson John Parke Custis), wrote that Washington's matchless limbs have in but two instances been faithfully portrayed: in the 1790 equestrian portrait by John Trumbull, and in this engraving.
