Ancient hand-colored architectural rosette from Tivoli, Italy.
These fine engravings depict decorative architectural elements from the buildings and monuments of Ancient Rome and surrounding towns. The floral carvings are shown full front and also in cross section. Because of bits of paint which, upon close inspection, were detected on the original structures, it was deduced that they had once been brightly colored.
Background on Creator
Carlo Antonini (1740-1821) was an Italian artist active in the 18th century, known primarily as an architect and engraver whose work included architectural and figure engravings. He is associated with designs related to architectural treatises, sometimes linked with Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola, and his drawings and prints—such as figure studies of men posed in landscape settings—are held in major museum collections, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
