Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr was a highly regarded astronomer renowned for his expertise in lunar observations. This chart centers on the comparison of synodic periods as viewed from Earth and other planets. At its heart, the illustration features celestial beings observing the heavens through a telescope from their perch among the clouds. Encircling the main scene are three Tychonic models of the solar system, along with a diagram illustrating the Sun’s apparent size as seen from various planets.

Doppelmayr served as a professor of mathematics at the Aegidien Gymnasium in Nuremberg. He frequently collaborated with Johann Baptist Homann and later the Homann Heirs to create celestial and astronomical charts for atlases. The chart was engraved between 1735 and 1742 and was included in two major compilations of Doppelmayr’s works published by Homann Heirs: the Atlas Coelestis in quo Mundus Spectabilis... in 1742, and its revised edition, Atlas Novus Coelestis..., in 1748.
