Scarce Pictorial Map and Guide of WWII Sydney
Lively map of Sydney printed for the use of British military visitors near the end of World War II. Shows tram, ferry, and bus routes. Great emphasis was placed on accommodating and entertaining service men and women on leave from the front or stationed in Sydney. Lighthearted and whimsical, the map is presented with a level of clarity that would make it quite useful to newcomers and visitors.
Shows accommodations for members of the British military and numerous places of interest, many keyed to an extensive reference on the verso of the map. Indicates churches, art galleries, museums, botanic gardens, libraries, parks, universities, harbor excursions and much more. Title cartouche features an oak tree with the motto used by the Anthony Hordern enterprise “While I Live I’ll Grow”. Folds into pamphlet size with title on recto and map of Sydney’s Popular Beaches on verso.
Background on Creator
Anthony Hordern & Sons was a major department store in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. With 52 acres of retail space, Anthony Hordern's was once the largest department store in the world. The historic Anthony Hordern building, which was located on a block bounded by George Street, Liverpool, Pitt and Goulburn Streets, on what was a small hill called Brickfield Hill in the Sydney central business district, was controversially demolished in 1986, to make way for the World Square development.
Condition
Mild age toning with occasional stains and minimal loss at folds. Very good.
