Thomas Kitchin engraved this map as an illustration for Dr. Robertson's "History of America", a highly acclaimed work on the Americas that saw numerous editions and translations over a 35-year span. The map, first published in 1777, exemplifies the commercial cartography of its time, just before the Jesuit exploration of Upper California began providing more detailed geographical information.
The map offers detailed depictions of Southern Arizona and New Mexico, as well as contemporary interpretations of Baja California. While the interior of Texas is sparsely detailed, labeled as "Great Space of Land Unknown”, the overall representation aligns with some of the finest commercial cartography available in Europe at that time. This map serves as a valuable snapshot of geographical knowledge in the late eighteenth century, reflecting the limits of European understanding of the American continent prior to further exploration and documentation.
