This charming pocket map of Paris is divided into the city’s 20 arrondissements, each designated by Roman numerals and indexed at right. Issued as a practical tourist map for “foreigners,” it offers a remarkably detailed street-level view of the city and depicts major landmarks in handsome three-dimensional perspective, including the Louvre, Notre Dame, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Hôtel des Invalides. Published a decade before the Eiffel Tower transformed the skyline, it preserves an engaging image of Paris in an earlier era. At upper left, a list of the city’s “portes,” or gates, identifies the fortified wall that once enclosed the metropolis.
