John Christian Schetky was a Scottish marine painter who was born in Edinburgh in 1778. Schetky's work became increasingly popular in the early 19th century, and he was appointed Marine Painter to George IV, William IV, and Queen Victoria. He was a member of the Royal Academy and exhibited his work regularly at the academy's summer exhibitions.

Schetky's paintings are known for their accurate depiction of ships and seascapes. He often painted large-scale battle scenes, and his work is characterized by its dramatic lighting and attention to detail. Schetky's paintings are also notable for their historical accuracy. He often consulted with naval officers and historians to ensure that his paintings were accurate representations of naval battles and the ships that engaged in them.

Schetky's work is still highly regarded today, and his paintings are held in many major museums around the world. He is considered one of the most important British marine painters of the 19th century.
