1849 map depicting the United States as a growing country amidst westward expansion. Published post-Texas Annexation. Western territories include New Mexico, California, Utah, Oregon, Missouri, Minnesota, and Indian Territory. Near the lower left-hand corner appears a statistical table listing the thirty-one United States (counting the District of Columbia) along with their geographic areas, population, and number of counties. Map contains numerous annotations about the locations of Native peoples and topographical features, as well as a numbered list of the country’s nine tallest mountains. Also shows parts of Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean.
The map was published by Carl Flemming (1806-1878), who had earlier published a map of Texas while it was an independent republic. Flemming's map was part of a larger trend of Texas-related publications within Germany at the time; this was due to the fact that many Germans had begun to emigrate and settle in Texas, resulting in an increased German interest in the region.
