In 1840 he crossed the North Sea in a warship, and in 1843 he was with a training squadron in the Mediterranean. Between 1830 and 1850 he taught drawing at the Royal Naval Institute at Medemblik.
The lithographs of this work were designed by Schotel as an addition on "Geschiedenis van het Ned. Zeewezen" (1833-48) by J.C. de Jonge. Schotel's work was published in Dutch under the title "Heldendaden der Nederlanders ter zee", no copy of this French edition is found by us in any library.
