This beautiful antique hand-colored copperplate engraving by French cartographer Nicholas Sanson dates to 1656 and depicts the coast of Chile at the height of the Spanish Colonial era.

Born in 1600 at Abbeville, France, Sanson has been called the "father of French cartography" and his maps were some of the most accurate and up-to-date in the world at the time. His work had a significant impact on the development of cartography and geography in Europe.

Sanson died in Paris in 1667. His sons, Guillaume and Adrien, continued his work as cartographers.
