Full Title: "Map of the City of San Antonio Bexar County, Texas Including Suburbs Both North and South"

This amazing map of San Antonio was published by Nicolaus Tengg in 1921. The keen eye will observe several interesting features. One of the more notable ones is the lack of a river bypass between Houston Street and Villita Street. The same year this map was published, a catastrophic flood occurred, killing 51 people. The disaster inspired plans to build Olmos Dam upstream and bypass the prominent bend in the San Antonio River which snakes through the center of downtown. After the bypass was constructed, the river banks lining the now calm river bend were eventually transformed into the River Walk, one of the hottest spots in San Antonio.

The map's publisher, Nicolaus Tengg was born in Austria in 1847. His family immigrated to San Antonio in 1852. Tengg was a renaissance man. He was a bookseller, stationer, printer and mapmaker. He ran a bookstore in San Antonio that was a popular hangout for German-speaking local intellectuals.
