Authorized by an act of Congress on June 8, 1837 the "Government of Texas notes" as they are known by collectors succeeded the star notes as the second form of paper money circulated by the Republic of Texas. In contrast the the relatively simple design of the star notes, these feature elaborate and beautiful images from Greek mythology and the American West. The keen eye will notice several period features including handwritten issue numbers and dates. Another interesting feature is that Houston, Texas is still listed as the young republic's capitol.
