Background on Creator
Thomas Bowen and his father Emanuel Bowen, a prominent father-son team of 18th-century English cartographers and engravers. Emanuel Bowen (1694–1767) was one of the leading mapmakers of his era, serving as Royal Mapmaker to both King George II of Great Britain and Louis XV of France. He was renowned for producing some of the most detailed, accurate, and decorative maps of the century, and he collaborated with or influenced many significant figures in British cartography.
Thomas Bowen (1733–1790) apprenticed under his father and continued the family business after Emanuel's death. He produced a wide range of maps, including those depicting North America, the Holy Land, and England, often updating and expanding on his father's work. Despite their professional acclaim and royal appointments, both Emanuel and Thomas Bowen experienced financial hardship and died in poverty.
