From Kunstformen der Natur, a book of prints based on Haeckel's sketches published by lithographer Adolf Giltsch. Haeckel (1834-1919), a German zoologist, marine biologist, and artist, was responsible for discovering and naming thousands of new species. He also coined many biological terms such as 'ecology,' 'phylum,' 'phylogeny,' and 'Protista,' and helped popularize Charles Darwin's ideas in Germany. In addition to its scientific importance, Kunstformen der Natur proved highly influential to early-twentieth-century art, architecture, and design; many artists associated with Art Nouveau drew inspiration from Haeckel's images.
