The Most Successful American Landing Beach of D-Day

Detailed map of Utah Beach showing positions of American and German forces at the time of the landings.  Map shows inland detail with numerous historic sites including St Marie Eglise, Carentan, and others.  Compared to the Omaha Beach bridgehead, the Utah assault was much more successful with penetrations mesure in miles at the close of day as opposed to yards at Omaha.  The airborne landings are also shown in great detail.  Planned dropzones for the 82nd and 101st are shown.  The haphazard nature of the drop is illustrated down to individual planeload (stick).  Numerous airborne drops are indicated many miles from planned drop zones.  Shows German beach strong points overrun on D-Day, as well as German strong points at the close of day.

Utah Beach, the westernmost of the five D-Day landing sites, was assaulted by the U.S. 4th Infantry Division on June 6, 1944, with strong support from airborne troops who had parachuted inland hours earlier to secure key objectives and block German counterattacks. Strong currents and confusion during the landing caused the first wave to land about 2,000 yards south of the planned sector, but this actually placed them in a less heavily defended area, resulting in relatively light resistance and low casualties—with around 197 killed among the more than 23,000 troops who came ashore. By the end of the day, American forces had advanced several miles inland, captured planned exit points, and established a secure beachhead, making Utah Beach one of the most successful landings of the Normandy invasion.
