Map of the Duchy of Livonia, present-day Estonia and Latvia, by Nicolas Sanson (1600 - 1667).

Born at Abbeville, France in 1600, Sanson has been called the "father of French cartography" and his maps were some of the most accurate and up-to-date in the world at the time. His work had a significant impact on the development of cartography and geography in Europe.

Sanson died in Paris in 1667. His sons, Guillaume and Adrien, continued his work as cartographers.
