Background on Creator

Pierre Bourgoin was a French line and letter engraver active in Paris during the early to mid-18th century. He is best known for engraving maps for some of the most notable cartographers of the time, particularly Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697–1782). Bourgoin’s work appears on several important antique maps and globes dating from the 1730s to the 1760s, including celestial and terrestrial globes, maps of Africa, and miniature maps of regions like the Greek Islands and Illyria. Using the technique of chalcography (copperplate engraving), he contributed to the production of high-quality, detailed maps that remain scarce and highly collectible today. Although exact details about his birth and death are not recorded, it is evident from surviving works that he was actively engraving between approximately 1739 and 1765. His plates were associated not only with d’Anville but also with other notable publishers and geographers of the period, reflecting his role in producing beautifully executed maps and atlases in Paris that continue to be valued by collectors and historians alike.
