From American Ornithology (originally published 1808-14) by Alexander Wilson, the "Father of American Ornithology."

Born in Scotland in 1766, Alexander Wilson couldn't have known he'd become the "father of American ornithology." After immigrating to the United States in 1794, he initially worked as a weaver and peddler. But his passion for nature soon blossomed, fueled by encounters with American birds unseen in his homeland.

Driven by an insatiable curiosity, Wilson embarked on a self-taught journey to document these avian wonders. He meticulously observed and sketched them in their natural habitats, traveling thousands of miles across the young nation. He even learned etching and engraving to create lifelike portraits of his subjects.
