Map of North America by Philadelphia publisher Augustus Mitchell. Depicts Mexico extending upward along the Rio Grande to the 42nd Parallel and labels present-day Alaska as 'Russian America.' Base map was originally published in 1846, when Texas was still an independent republic; therefore, printed boundaries and labels show Texas as separate from the U. S. However, this edition, published in 1848 after Texas's annexation, colors over these boundaries to indicate that Texas had joined the United States.
Coloring also divides New Mexico in two, strangely splitting it between the United States and Mexico. Though New Mexico joined the United States in the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, it was not made an official territory of the U. S. until 1850.
