Panorama of the Seat of War

Birds Eye View
of Virginia, Maryland Delaware and the District of Columbia

Rare map of one of the primary theaters of the American Civil War showing the Chesapeake Bay and inland environs. Cities depicted include Baltimore, MD, Fredericksburg, Alexandria, Portsmouth, Norfolk, Richmond, Newport News, Petersburg, Lynchburg, Charlottesville, Lexington, and Staunton, VA, Harper's Ferry, WV, and Dover. DE. Bachman published a series of these elephant-folio sized images in his Panorama of the Seat of War, all showing different theaters of the Civil War.

Background on Creator

John Bachmann was a Swiss-born lithographer who came to the United States shortly after 1848 and became known for his bird’s-eye views of American cities and landscapes. His work was especially important because it blended cartography and fine art in a way that helped define the look of mid-19th-century urban view printing.

He is also associated with Civil War-era imagery, including the series Panorama of the Seat of War, which brought the southern landscape to Northern audiences.
