This beautiful hand-colored antique map was published by Justus Danckerts in 1688 and depicts the course of the Danube, Europe's second longest river. The keen eye will observe several notable cities and locales, including Constantinople, Belgrade, Budapest , Venice and Heidelberg.
The 17th century saw the Danckerts family flourish in Amsterdam as map sellers and publishers. Theodorus Danckerts, born in 1663, was the grandson of the company's founder, Cornelius Danckerts. Together with his father Justus, Theodorus produced several atlases between 1680 and 1700. These atlases, initially created with their own engraved plates, were eventually sold to R. & J. Ottens who then published them under his own name. Theodorus Danckerts passed away in 1727.
